The Student Opera Theatre Association of SUNY Fredonia presents its annual Opera Scenes production featuring performances by some of SUNY Fredonia’s most talented students. This year’s show features scenes from three operas:
Cold Mountain, composed by Jennifer Higdon
The Merry Wives of Windsor, by Otto Nicolai
Carmen, by Georges Bizet
Three-time GRAMMY winner and Pulitzer Prize winner, Jennifer Higdon is the 2024-2025 SUNY Fredonia Sorel Visiting Artist. Her works represent a range of genres, from chamber to orchestral and wind ensemble, as well as vocal, choral, and opera. Her 2012 opera Cold Mountain is based on the 1997 Charles Frazier novel of the same name. It tells the story of a wounded Confederate soldier at the time of the American Civil War.
The Merry Wives of Windsor is an 1849 opera by Otto Nicolai based on Shakespeare’s play. It details the comedic adventures of Sir John Falstaff, an unhappy rascal on a quest for affection and money.
A searing depiction of a woman who craves love but creates obsession and jealousy, Georges Bizet’s 1875 opera Carmen is one of the most popular operas ever written. The irresistible Carmen captivates the eyes of every man she meets, including the lovesick soldier Don José. As he forsakes his military duty, his fiancée, and the law, his admiration becomes uncontrollable obsession; and Carmen leaves him for prestige and freedom.
All performers are undergraduate vocal music students at SUNY Fredonia and members of the Student Opera Theatre Association.
